Invasive alien species are the second most significant cause of species loss after habitat destruction and their threat to biodiversity needs to be dealt with as a matter of urgency. ~ SANBI

The variability among living organisms and the ecological complexes of which they part; biodiversity includes the diversity between species and diversity of the ecosystem.

From the Egoli Granite Grassland in the south to the Pretoria Witwatersberg Mountain Bushveld in the North/North East, these viable ecosystems provide ecological infrastructure.

The variety of habitats offered by the three broad vegetation types;  the habitats in the ridges, valleys and plains, the rivers, wetlands and seeps; and the steep variation in altitude in the region adds resilience required to adapt to climate change.

Grasslands require fire to ensure sustained biodiversity, allowing the moribund material to be removed, providing light and space for forbs to grow.

Low impact ecotourism and recreation activities are intended to support the conservation effort.
