The Fire Act places a burden on the landowner to maintain adequate firebreaks from which runaway or wild fires can be managed and brought under control.

The Conservationist knows that controlled burns are also needed to combat bush encroachment, and to remove moribund material.

Frits van Oudtshoorn cautions: By burning a veld that is in poor condition (pioneer or sub-climax stage), the condition of the veld will deteriorate even further.

A key objective is a fire management regime - for control purposes, and to maintain healthy veld.
