Urban Wildlife with the Johannesburg Wildlife Vet

18th April 2021

Over 40 people attended the Urban Wildlife talk by the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital and Rehabilitation Facility. This event was held on Sunday the 18th April 2021. Everyone involved deemed it an absolute hit. It was wonderful to see the number of children in the audience who participated with great enthusiasm!

The morning started with independent wildlife rehabilitation specialist, Nicci Wright. She introduced us to many birds and small animals we may have recognised, but up to that point knew so little about. People spot these species of fauna regularly in the urban areas of South Africa, and it was a treat to find out more about our local wildlife.

Next up we had veterinary surgeon, Dr Karin Lourens, who shared some of their stories with us about the incredible work they are doing. This left us with a far better understanding of how we can share our space with the small creatures of the world.

The cherry on the cake was the snake talk. This part of the talk was conducted by ecologist, Grant Fairley. He also brought along a few of his reptilian friends for us to meet. They were the clear hit of the show.

Everyone came away with a deeper appreciation for the wonderful creatures we share our world with.
