Ride the Rhenoster 2025: Grit, Mud & Glory
The highlight of our 2025 events has to be the Ride the Rhenoster, only because it was carried out in the most challenging of conditions! The original date was moved because the Highveld 94.7 cycling event was rescheduled to exactly the same date as our Ride the Rhenoster. At the request of those riders who had already booked and wished to do both events we moved the date, not realizing the consequences of this decision.
We had a record number of bookings, the highest to date, but the absolutely worst weather predictions. With all the preparation that had gone into the event and the fact that our volunteers and service providers had already put aside that day for this event we decided we would only cancel if the weather made it unsafe to ride.
Needless to say, not all those who booked arrived, but those that did seemed to enjoy it doubly because of the challenges the wet weather presented. Most of those who booked the 40km geared down to the 20km route but a small number of courageous riders actually took on and completed the 40km route. Two children rode and completed the 20km route. One 82 year old rider said he had just taken up the sport, had fallen off his bike in the rain and mud numerous times but had never had so much fun!
Those who deserved the highest praise however were the Marshals and volunteers, who stood out there hour after hour in wet, cold and muddy conditions ensuring the safety of the riders, helping those who got lost, or needed a helping hand with a damaged bike, or a lift back to base camp. They were the true heroes of this event!
