In 2025, snares, and in a few cases snared wildlife, were found continuously, particularly on the Egoli Granite Grassland offsets and in the surrounding area. It was decided a new approach was needed. Monthly snare walks simply were not adequate, so two teams of two trusted and experienced people each, was set up and paid for by the GSA. They were sent out weekly. This has proved to be most effective.

At first, 14 to 15 snares were removed at a time until the snarer was spotted and identified by one of our team members. SDS was called in for assistance. Although it was not possible to make a case against him, he was successfully warned off and has not been spotted in the area again. The number of snares found has dropped to 1 to 2 and on some walks 0.

This has enabled us to expand our search areas and while one team continues to cover the EGG the second team is searching further and further afield. We will continue with our current snare walk operations during 2026.
