The Wild Crew – Rocks
August 2025
Clearly, rocks do rock, if the number of children and parents who turned up for this event was anything to go by. Everyone enjoyed the walk to Koppie Alleen, and the climb to the top was a real adventure! Understanding the vital role rocks have played in the forming of the planet, and their contribution to the environment in the past and now, gave everyone pause for thought.
The adventure did not end at the top of the koppie but extended to visiting a cave and a quartz vein, and seeing stromatolites. Back at base, they learned how to put together a rock collection and catalogue it. Of course, food must fit in somewhere so, after tucking into their snack packs, they still made edible rocks – learning in the process how different types of rocks are formed, like sandstone and metamorphic rock. Everyone went home tired, full and happy!
Next month’s event is all about trees, plants, ecology and conservation – very important topics if we want our children to know how to take care of the planet. Remember, it’s the only one we have!
