The Wild Crew – Birds
11 October 2025
What a beautiful sunny day it was out in the Crocodile River Reserve!
We started by exploring how birds are adapted to what they eat and where they live. From sharp beaks to clever claws, every feathered friend has its own design for survival. Our walk took us through five different habitats, each alive with birdsong and movement.
The sky was busy with calls from all kinds of birds, while the kids eagerly collected feathers and even discovered a real nest! On average, the group spotted six species, though one small team of keen-eyed Wild Crew adventurers managed to identify sixteen!
Back at The Sheds, everyone learned how birds build their intricate nests. It looked easy at first… until the challenge began! Soon, laughter and concentration filled the air as everyone used creativity (and a bit of problem-solving!) to weave their own unique nests.
A special moment came when flycatchers and swallows put on a show, feasting on insects in a nearby tree, while the Black-collared Barbet joined us at the cultural stone area with his cheerful song.
A huge thank-you to Sulize and Suretha, who makes every outing look effortless. And of course, to all our young explorers. Your curiosity and energy make the Wild Crew come alive!
